Four of us set off in a small motorized craft. Huge thanks to the Forestry Commission and rangers, without whom this would have been impossible.<br />
<br />
Moving around the island carefully & methodically we used up the 100 E rings we had in no time at all! Despite our best efforts to match rings to the number of chicks estimated from the shoreline, there were still a number of ringable age that we had to leave. We also located and ringed 6 Common Terns.<br />

Well, there were lots of hirundines but none coming low enough to catch and as for Swifts were concerned ... none, which was a surprise this far in to May.<br />
<br />
I did however catch a Pied Wagtail and two Yellow Wagtails (male and female). The female was just beginning to develop a brood patch, so I expect she will be breeding in the crop fields to the east where several pairs nest each year, supported by the relatively abundant insect life found around the filter beds. Nine Yellow Wags were on ste this evening.<br />

Andy has been working with Forestry Commission in the National Forest for some time now. This has included general conservation work but also bird ringing. Two of the fields at one site are superb in the winter for Snipe and related species, so it was time to organize a mist net session to catch and ring the visiting waders.<br />
<br />
Waders generally have superb eyesight, so there is little point trying to catch in fixed nets during daylight. The team therefore assembled yesterday afternoon with a view to setting nets and then catching just after dusk. Once we were happy the conditions were right, we set off to encourage any birds on the ground in to the nets and quickly extracted three species. From left to right above (which is also smallest to largest): Jack Snipe, Snipe and Woodcock. Remarkably this is the second time we have managed the same feat at this particular site.<br />
<br />
<u>Update 19th Feb</u>. I also posted the above image on Twitter; it has already received over 36,000 views! The power of social media; just wish I'd written something profound, perhaps about the plight of waders and habitat loss.Charnwood Ringershttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16122950670390836306noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6327941408542453624.post-64011798697471176582017-10-12T08:30:00.001-07:002017-10-12T08:35:45.311-07:00'Stockamsel' Blackbirds<span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: "arial" , "tahoma" , "helvetica" , "freesans" , sans-serif; font-size: 14.85px;">We ringed two apparent continental Blackbirds this morning and the word 'stockamsel' came to mind (see below).</span><br />

<span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: "arial" , "tahoma" , "helvetica" , "freesans" , sans-serif; font-size: 14.85px;">Not only is it a bit of nostalgia but from Clare College, Cambridge some light on the subject. Evidently the expression 'stockamsel' was first coined by Johann Andreas Naumann he of (naumanni) Lesser Kestrel and <span style="font-size: 14.85px;">Naumann's</span>Thrush fame. It relates to young males resembling well marked females. This is a dark billed first year male with white fringed breast feathers creating a clearly visible 'scaly' effect. Ageing as a first year would be easy anyway - note the brown 'juvenile' feathers in the wing and the odd one in the body (e.g. just behind the ear coverts). </span><br />

The short session ended with 28 birds with Goldcrest the most numerous on 10, Dunnock 4, Wren 6, Blackbird, Redwing, Pied Wagtail and just before packing up a Green Woodpecker was in the bottom shelf, a nice end to the session and the first to be captured for the site.<br />

Thanks to the efforts of Jim Graham and Steve Lister we have so far recorded five returning adults that were colour ringed in 2014. These are U01, U08, U23, U26 and U36. Steve also managed to read two metal rings of birds we rung in 2013, before we started colour ringing. <br />
We have also recorded eight of this years juveniles, which are codes U70, U71, U73, U74, U80,U82, U84, and U86.<br />
It would be great to receive records from other sites, so please check for Lime colour rings on any Common Terns.<br />
Observations to Andy Smith at <a href="mailto:tropicbirdtobago@hotmail.com">tropicbirdtobago@hotmail.com</a>andy smithhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02280500832530084084noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6327941408542453624.post-52039717866197867882016-07-16T08:42:00.001-07:002016-07-16T08:42:18.000-07:00Limeys Return.<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Jim Graham alerted me to the Common Terns that are now regularly feeding at Cropston Reservoir.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-43TDTDnMgVA/V4pRqs8yJNI/AAAAAAAADHM/rVI6G9I7uK8VoPL73mzYvaRtF2vPj-GHgCLcB/s1600/P1060662.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-43TDTDnMgVA/V4pRqs8yJNI/AAAAAAAADHM/rVI6G9I7uK8VoPL73mzYvaRtF2vPj-GHgCLcB/s320/P1060662.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
The terns rest on the railings and this allows the colour rings to be read.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-06HxBP9VKq4/V4pRqHCL9PI/AAAAAAAADHI/jqNKBxerNTskvtZHqphNUdABx-dEFKaVACLcB/s1600/P1060663.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-06HxBP9VKq4/V4pRqHCL9PI/AAAAAAAADHI/jqNKBxerNTskvtZHqphNUdABx-dEFKaVACLcB/s320/P1060663.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
It was great to hear that Jim had seen two of the terns that we colour ringed in 2014. He reported seeing U01, amazingly the first Comte that we colour ringed at WCP on 11/06/2014, and U36 rung on the 23/06/2014.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/--r9nT-8qjOg/V4pSCm--_tI/AAAAAAAADHg/SJVsWFLGHdcelwPEhfte8RE45FNHvBrTwCLcB/s1600/P1060653.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/--r9nT-8qjOg/V4pSCm--_tI/AAAAAAAADHg/SJVsWFLGHdcelwPEhfte8RE45FNHvBrTwCLcB/s320/P1060653.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
Today I managed to record another returning adult, U23<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-TkoBj2MLv0c/V4pSC5scS5I/AAAAAAAADHk/luHuApqKkaIlz4wp4gUjo8Q1MSf19562ACLcB/s1600/P1060656.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="201" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-TkoBj2MLv0c/V4pSC5scS5I/AAAAAAAADHk/luHuApqKkaIlz4wp4gUjo8Q1MSf19562ACLcB/s320/P1060656.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
and also three of this years juveniles, U73, U74 and U80.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-yipjMYCzaaI/V4pSCsjzjYI/AAAAAAAADHc/RuG7yIrXigQx56I1kp103vuEda23uvlcQCLcB/s1600/P1060657.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="218" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-yipjMYCzaaI/V4pSCsjzjYI/AAAAAAAADHc/RuG7yIrXigQx56I1kp103vuEda23uvlcQCLcB/s320/P1060657.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
There was also this adult, with 2 plain yellow rings on the left leg. I am awaiting information on what scheme this bird belongs to.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-SMhTeuJ7P80/V4pR1inUTEI/AAAAAAAADHQ/qA_LpsKQwnUCSxYFaHQvxIkOvoleb0EGQCLcB/s1600/P1060645.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="245" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-SMhTeuJ7P80/V4pR1inUTEI/AAAAAAAADHQ/qA_LpsKQwnUCSxYFaHQvxIkOvoleb0EGQCLcB/s320/P1060645.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
We would welcome any information on our Limeys from Cropston or any locations. Email the details to <a href="mailto:tropicbirdtobago@Hotmail.com">tropicbirdtobago@Hotmail.com</a>andy smithhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02280500832530084084noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6327941408542453624.post-43832747928117256082016-07-06T05:47:00.000-07:002016-07-06T05:47:46.346-07:00Belgium Visitor!<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-_jKmYnhWbX8/V3z8JUkIOWI/AAAAAAAADF4/EvRtl3Jt9Rki_55hcL6obCjlFBUVCOrYACLcB/s1600/P1060477.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-_jKmYnhWbX8/V3z8JUkIOWI/AAAAAAAADF4/EvRtl3Jt9Rki_55hcL6obCjlFBUVCOrYACLcB/s320/P1060477.JPG" width="264" /></a></div>
Amongst the 12 Reed Warblers caught at WCP was this Belgium rung bird.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-rbprDVa0X88/V3z8W54EcNI/AAAAAAAADF8/jVjIvjoyIIQMHnjuzXxUiZ_BI0BJ02B7wCLcB/s1600/P1060474.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-rbprDVa0X88/V3z8W54EcNI/AAAAAAAADF8/jVjIvjoyIIQMHnjuzXxUiZ_BI0BJ02B7wCLcB/s320/P1060474.JPG" width="215" /></a></div>
It is just possible to pick out BRU and SSELS on this rather worn and misshapen ring. It will be interesting to find out if this individual has bred previously in Belgium, or was rung on passage.<br />

The rafts at WCP have again been successful, with 19 young terns rung last week.<br />

<span style="font-size: small;">Had another excellent ringing session this morning in one of our reedbed sites.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: small;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: small;">The weather looked doubtful with the forecast on Friday night changing with the hour. But we decided it was worth the risk. Nets were open at first light and we managed a couple of net rounds before a heavy downpour. We had to close up for an hour until the rain passed - at usually the most productive time of the morning.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: small;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: small;">We still managed to catch plenty of birds, especially reed warblers. The great majority were males with the females, presumably, still of eggs or keeping young warm after the storm. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: small;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: small;">Taking down the nets after a 7 hour stint produced a great end to the day. An adult male kingfisher <i>(Alcedo atthis)</i>, while not uncommon it is always nice to catch such a handsome bird.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-small;"><b><i> </i></b></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: small;">Elsewhere, some members of the group have been busy nest recording. We have a long term study of a tree sparrow <i>(Passer montanus)</i> colony, where I have been ringing nearly 20 years. The first brood has already fledged and the second clutches of eggs are now being laid. The poor spring weather has meant that the first egg date estimates for the first brood are calculated at around 10 days later than the mean, so hopefully they will make up time. Three broods is not uncommon at this long established colony.</span></div>

It's something I've been wanting to do for sometime and we now have enough ringers that are interested and able to commit the time.<br />
<br />
Yesterdays trial was a great success with a couple of highlights. The ring number above (D787769) was a control Reed Warbler <i>(Acrocephalus scripaceus)</i> age 4. If anyone recognizes the ring number, please let me know. The recapture data will be submitted to the BTO in the usual way.<br />
<br />
Another highlight was the first Cetti's Warbler <i>(Cettia cetti)</i> to be caught on the reserve, an adult male. It will be nice to catch a juvenile later in the year to prove breeding.<br />
<br />

The more common birds often bring up most surprises. Yesterday we caught two Treecreepers <i>(Certhia familiaris)</i> one with a brood patch, not only the first that we had caught on the reserve but the volunteer warden had only seen one on the reserve in the previous 20 years.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It was also nice to catch the first juvenile of the year. Not surprisingly a Robin.</div>

We also the checked the progress of a Tree Sparrow <i>(Passer montanus) </i>colony. This year all the nest boxes are occupied except for two, that have been taken over by Bumble bees. The nests are at the hatching stage and I will ring the chicks when large enough. Each box will have two broods, sometimes three, in the season. At the end of the season all the data gathered will be submitted to the Nest Record Scheme of the BTO. At the same site swallows usually nest in the garage, this year we have three nests occupied with eggs in. </div>

Looks like a bumper year in Charnwood. </div>

After a chilly start at first light the sun came through for a very pleasant morning. Catches are low this time of year before the juveniles are around, so 29 birds of 13 species was good.<br />

Four species of migrant warbler were caught including Chiffchaff, Willow Warbler, Blackcap and a retrap Garden Warbler originally ringed in 2013. The final bird of the day was a male Great Spotted Woodpecker.<br />

Yesterday afternoon a couple of us were out at the local Nature Reserve checking nest boxes. We have a small number of large boxes for Tawny Owls. This years appears to be a good year for Owls, with three nests. Two other boxes have Stock Dove nests and the last box is empty. One of the boxes usually contain a Mandarin nest. Although several pairs are in the wood, none are using the boxes.</div>

It is always wise to ring adult Owls in the daytime as they are usually more docile and easier to handle. At night they can be very protective of the nest site. Indeed, one famous bird photographer lost on eye when trying to photograph Tawny Owls at the nest. </div>

These were the second, third and fourth of the afternoon and although the first two were typical olive/yellow and dull nominate <i>collybita</i>, the third was so pale and silvery it looked like a totally different species. A bit like the last few holes at The Open when the light is failing and the commentators say 'you can't tell from the TV but it's almost dark'; well, by the time I came to the pale Chiff it was, so forgive this underwhelming image taken without flash, to avoid false bleaching, but it doesn't capture just how dark it had got.<br />

Starting mid-afternoon with cold, dry conditions and a moderate breeze we ventured into the wood for some roost ringing. The feeders had been replenished a few days earlier, the usual tit species keeping us busy while we waited for darkness to fall.<br />
Our last but one net round produced a nice Jay for our trainee Chris; but disappointingly the last round of the day didn't contain the expected Blackbirds or Redwing, just 4 Chaffinch ended the day. Where had they all gone for the night?<br />
Totals:- 14 new and 21 retraps, Blue Tit 6 (5), Great Tit 2 (7), Coal Tit (6), Robin (1) Goldcrest 1 (1), Jay 1, Nuthatch (1), Chaffinch 4.chrishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14095837597920462221noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6327941408542453624.post-70591021572893235172015-11-23T10:08:00.002-08:002015-11-23T15:48:31.924-08:00'stockamsel' Blackbird - the Naumann link<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-GOMY1sv46Uw/VlNUY1S69XI/AAAAAAAAAjA/_iQRU1rNSi8/s1600/SAM_0370.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-GOMY1sv46Uw/VlNUY1S69XI/AAAAAAAAAjA/_iQRU1rNSi8/s320/SAM_0370.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Dark nights and slow birding days, so time to scratch around for something mildly interesting. I ringed an apparent continental Blackbird this morning and the word 'stockamsel' came to mind (see below).<br />
<br />
Not only is it a bit of nostalgia but from Clare College, Cambridge some light on the subject. Evidently the expression 'stockamsel' was first coined by Johann Andreas Naumann he of (naumanni) Lesser Kestrel and Dusky Thrush fame. It relates to young males resembling well marked females. This is a dark billed first year male with white fringed flank feathers creating a clearly visible 'scaly' effect.<br />
<br />
It was quite a good morning. Lots of birds around and with a single 60' net 24 new birds including 8 blackbirds, 5 Goldcrest and a Redwing with very dark, heavily streaked upper breast (possible Icelandic race?).<br />

<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-vHpYSC6BNxA/VikKyaAKVjI/AAAAAAAACt8/k8wLegVfv50/s1600/P1030836-001.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="226" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-vHpYSC6BNxA/VikKyaAKVjI/AAAAAAAACt8/k8wLegVfv50/s320/P1030836-001.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
I recently caught this first winter Dunnock with a damaged or deformed lower mandible.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-hYN5xvYLVQo/VikK79v5LUI/AAAAAAAACuE/1O1SCqu3bMs/s1600/P1030832-001.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="221" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-hYN5xvYLVQo/VikK79v5LUI/AAAAAAAACuE/1O1SCqu3bMs/s320/P1030832-001.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
It seemed to be coping well and had a weight of 21.8 gms. It is difficult to imagine how it might have lost the bill tip, so it might be a deformity. The upper mandible does seem to have grown a little longer and more curved at the tip than normal.andy smithhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02280500832530084084noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6327941408542453624.post-52866135266023978412015-10-05T06:59:00.000-07:002015-10-05T06:59:26.661-07:00Banding in Canada.<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Paula still does not believe me that it was pure luck that I came across two great active ringing sites on our recent trip to the St Lawrence. The first was at Reserve nationale de faune du Cap- Tourmente, an hours drive east of Quebec City. This is a new site that had just started up. I especially loved the ringing hut!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-0IfVjXw5LRY/VhJ0ZRApmCI/AAAAAAAACqc/y68UCpSiqbM/s1600/P1030313.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-0IfVjXw5LRY/VhJ0ZRApmCI/AAAAAAAACqc/y68UCpSiqbM/s320/P1030313.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
All looks much as it would at a UK ringing station. What is great about seeing ringing abroad is that you always come away with ideas that might help your ringing at home.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-1TWzRyrxWVA/VhJ0kHU5yKI/AAAAAAAACqk/16fCh_swRO4/s1600/P1030309.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="211" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-1TWzRyrxWVA/VhJ0kHU5yKI/AAAAAAAACqk/16fCh_swRO4/s320/P1030309.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
I liked the large information boards that they had printed on plastic sheets. These could be passed round.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-VnUDiDeLwmg/VhJ0kSjphII/AAAAAAAACqo/qMUoBPfrOrA/s1600/P1030310.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-VnUDiDeLwmg/VhJ0kSjphII/AAAAAAAACqo/qMUoBPfrOrA/s320/P1030310.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
They use rings which are closed and on wires in these film canisters. The rings have to be opened using a sprocket on the pliers.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-xIH0iD6wwhw/VhJ0k2VYYDI/AAAAAAAACq0/7px7SRy3V1Y/s1600/P1030311.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-xIH0iD6wwhw/VhJ0k2VYYDI/AAAAAAAACq0/7px7SRy3V1Y/s320/P1030311.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
At Tourmente they used wooden posts, which are ridged and allow low guying. I liked the tennis balls on the pegs for safety. Below a close up of the sprocket on the pliers for ring opening.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-wKk43JLJT9A/VhJ03w_5SfI/AAAAAAAACq8/by2i_uyK3-E/s1600/P1030492.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-wKk43JLJT9A/VhJ03w_5SfI/AAAAAAAACq8/by2i_uyK3-E/s320/P1030492.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
Ring sizes were different to ours and they tend to check which size is most suitable more often than we do.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-o1rEiwjOd3E/VhJ03_9V3qI/AAAAAAAACrA/Br_YeDn6gR8/s1600/P1030493.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-o1rEiwjOd3E/VhJ03_9V3qI/AAAAAAAACrA/Br_YeDn6gR8/s320/P1030493.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
Some of the weighing pots had sides cut away so that the legs of birds could not push on the side and potentially get out. Might try this.<br />

We then drove further east to Tadoussac and discovered the ringing site at Maison de Dunes. A beautiful place with sunrise over the St Lawrence.<br />

Un grande Merci to Pierre Dumas and the other French Canadian banders for such a warm and friendly welcome to my unannounced visit. My time with you will be long remembered. Today amongst the numerous Coal Tits ringed at the Lodge was this bird.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/--gd-e8Fc0bk/Vggd0SMij2I/AAAAAAAAAiM/6mFHlk6WJFg/s1600/Coati.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/--gd-e8Fc0bk/Vggd0SMij2I/AAAAAAAAAiM/6mFHlk6WJFg/s320/Coati.JPG" width="187" /></a></div>
<br />
At first it looked like the whole bill was crossed but on closer examination it became apparent that the offending article was actually the lower mandible skewing to the left. We debated whether in the interests of the bird's welfare we should try and 'trim' the end to hopefully encourage even wear, but it seems the acquired wisdom is to leave well alone, which we did. The bird had a healthy weight and looked in good shape, so I'm sure it will be OK.Charnwood Ringershttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16122950670390836306noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6327941408542453624.post-84474184384869920812015-08-20T13:48:00.000-07:002015-08-20T13:48:41.542-07:00Sexing juvenile Siskins.<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-a43qra-kRxY/VdY2-5eItiI/AAAAAAAACZM/j4tiXgJJgZo/s1600/P1020821.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-a43qra-kRxY/VdY2-5eItiI/AAAAAAAACZM/j4tiXgJJgZo/s320/P1020821.JPG" width="208" /></a></div>
Today there has been a flock of about 60 Siskins at my ringing site. I have not had much luck tape luring and the call did not seem to work. I decided to try the song. It was a little more effective and I caught seven birds.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-pQW6-vVWlcg/VdY3RlhS_6I/AAAAAAAACZU/r62LstHVAhI/s1600/P1020822.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-pQW6-vVWlcg/VdY3RlhS_6I/AAAAAAAACZU/r62LstHVAhI/s320/P1020822.JPG" width="274" /></a></div>
In the recent Ringing and Migration I had read an article on sexing using the amount of black on the second outer-most tail feather. I decided to give it a go.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-kH1KNmu5Mgo/VdY3RlUu4sI/AAAAAAAACZY/MkjaiXatGyU/s1600/P1020823.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-kH1KNmu5Mgo/VdY3RlUu4sI/AAAAAAAACZY/MkjaiXatGyU/s320/P1020823.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
On some birds the blotch went almost to the base of the tail. It was difficult to measure, but the longest I recorded was 29.9. I presume a female, but it needs to be above 30 to be certain according to the paper.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-urWoE7yepCM/VdY3S40QmSI/AAAAAAAACZo/Nf3R3ulssZI/s1600/P1020825.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-urWoE7yepCM/VdY3S40QmSI/AAAAAAAACZo/Nf3R3ulssZI/s320/P1020825.JPG" width="307" /></a></div>
An adult male was 25.2 and a 3j had a measure of 24.5. The shortest I recorded was 17.8 on a 3. See below. Both these juveniles had some black feathers coming on the crown so I was able to sex them without the tail criteria.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ODzS4x3wUHI/VdY3WTL-NpI/AAAAAAAACak/2uKF7uPkI-c/s1600/P1020833-001.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="237" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ODzS4x3wUHI/VdY3WTL-NpI/AAAAAAAACak/2uKF7uPkI-c/s320/P1020833-001.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
It was good to see so many Siskins and I am sure some have bred locally.<br />
<br />
